WHILE IN THE PARK

Central Park was designated a NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK in 1963 and a NEW YORK CITY SCENIC LANDMARK in 1974.
CENTRAL PARK
First major urban public park in the United States
It was designed by
FREDERICK
LAW OLMSTED
(18221903) and
CALVERT VAUX
(18241895),
who won the competition to design
the Park on April 28,1858.
It is recognized as the
PREMIER PUBLIC
URBAN PARK
IN THE WORLD
as well as one of the
GREATEST WORKS
OF AMERICAN ART
of the 19th century.
Constructed from
1858 to 1873,
this
843 ACRE
PARK
is entirely man
made.
The Central Park Conservancy is a not
for
prot organization
founded by civic
minded New Yorkers to rescue Central Park
from a state of severe deterioration.
Since 1980, the Conservancy has led the revival of the Park
in partnership with the City of New York.
Today, we provide 75% of the Park’s annual operating budget
and are responsible for all aspects of park maintenance
as well as continued restoration.

This map and guide is based on 2017 survey data and represents
our best effort to represent conditions at a point in time.
Please note that path conditions are subject to the eects of weather
and wear. Central Park is constantly undergoing restoration and
maintenance, and work to improve accessibility is an ongoing part
of the stewardship of the Park. For updates on major disruptions
and scheduled closures, visit centralparknyc.org/alerts.
A PDF version of this map, available at centralparknyc.org/accessmap,
is updated between printings, and a digital map is in development.

As we restore the more rugged areas of the Park, such
as woodlands and native meadows, the Conservancy
adds rustic trails to expand opportunities for visitors to
experience the scenery. Wherever feasible, trails are
designed to meet the accessible trail guidelines of the
U.S. Access Board, which include specic requirements
for stable surfaces, trail width, passing spaces,
maximum slopes, and resting intervals. Established
to guide the development of accessible trails on federal
lands (like the national parks), they take into account
the more challenging terrain of natural outdoor areas,
and are useful for increasing access to the more
“wild” regions of the Park. The Accessible Trails symbol
indicates an area that includes trails designed to these
standards. We are continually adding more.
Originally designed for carriage rides through the
19th
century Park, the Drive today is a recreation loop
shared by cyclists, joggers, and pedestrians.
The inner lane is designated for pedestrians and joggers
traveling in either direction. The center lane is for
cyclists and pedi
cabs, and the outer lane for authorized
vehicles and horse carriages; all wheeled trac is
one
way, counterclockwise on the loop.

CENTRAL PARK
ACCESS MAP
A Guide for All Users
CENTRAL PARK IS A
PLACE FOR ALL USERS.
As we restore and maintain the Park, the Conservancy
is constantly working to improve accessibility, including
providing information that helps everyone experience it.
This map and guide is intended to be useful to all visitors,
with a particular emphasis on those for whom the Park’s
topography presents obstacles.
150 years ago, Central Park was conceived as an idyllic
and democratic public space, open to all. But its historic
and celebrated design — intended to provide all New
Yorkers with a reprieve from urban conditions and the
opportunity to connect with nature — also presents
challenges for park users with limited mobility.
